8th August to 14th August

The week began with investors hoping that softer US inflation would improve the market mood. However, that optimism struggled to take hold. Rising tensions between the US and Iran moved back Brent crude above $89 per barrel mark. It renewed concerns around India’s import bill, inflation and corporate costs, which hurt market sentiment.

Pressure also came from continued foreign investor selling and a weaker rupee, which hovered near ₹95.44 against the US dollar. Quarterly earnings added another layer of volatility. Strong results supported select stocks, but a sharp decline in profit at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and weakness across metals, automobiles and other heavyweight counters prevented a broader recovery.

What began last week as hope for stability therefore gave way to renewed caution, leaving the Sensex and Nifty lower for the week.

Stocks & Sectors in the News

Automotive

What happened

Auto stocks saw a brief earnings-led rally, but several key names failed to sustain their gains. Hero MotoCorp and Samvardhana Motherson initially rose following encouraging quarterly results, while Mahindra & Mahindra also gained during the final session.

Why it happened

Positive earnings triggered short-term buying, but subsequent profit-booking and broader market caution erased the gains.

What happened

Britannia Industries gained after reporting a 14% increase in quarterly profit and healthy revenue growth. Consumer-wellness company Cupid was another prominent performer, rising around 13.75% and reaching a new 52-week high. ITC gave up its initial post-results gains and ended the week lower.

Why it happened

Strong earnings and positive stock-specific momentum supported Britannia and Cupid. ITC faced pressure after reporting a 27% year-on-year decline in standalone profit, affected by higher cigarette taxes and disruption to its agri export business due to the West Asia crisis.

What happened

Metal stocks saw brief buying during the week, but the momentum did not hold. Hindalco Industries rallied in the final session and reported strong quarterly earnings, while JSW Steel also saw intermittent buying. However, both stocks ended the week lower. Tata Steel also faced pressure.

Strong company-specific earnings provided temporary support, but profit-booking, changing commodity prices and geopolitical uncertainty weighed on the sector.

Which stocks moved

Tata Steel
JSW Steel
Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare

What happened

Pharmaceutical stocks delivered a mixed performance. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories attracted buying during the week, while Zydus Lifesciences ended with weekly gains. However, Wockhardt gave up its early rise and closed the week lower, while Lupin also faced selling pressure.

Why it happened

A defensive preference for healthcare and company-specific developments supported selected drugmakers. At the same time, profit-booking and differing earnings expectations created a clear divide between the sector’s gainers and laggards.

Aisan Markets

Asian markets were like chalk and cheese. Chinese shares advanced as strong exports, supported by demand for AI-related products, lifted confidence in the economy. Hong Kong also gained, but Japan and South Korea faced intermittent pressure as investors booked profits in technology and chip stocks. Changing crude-oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty kept the wider region cautious.

  European Markets

European markets moved steadily higher as encouraging corporate earnings kept investors optimistic. Technology and healthcare stocks led the gains, helping the STOXX Europe 600 reach a record high and register its fourth consecutive weekly rise. Hopes of progress in US-Iran discussions also supported sentiment, although elevated valuations and geopolitical risks prevented investors from becoming overly confident.

  US Markets

US markets ended a volatile week with strong gains. Technology stocks led the rally, while weaker-than-expected employment data reduced expectations of an immediate interest-rate increase by the Federal Reserve. The S&P 500 closed at a record high, and the Nasdaq posted the strongest weekly gain among the major indices. Corporate earnings supported the rise, although oil prices and geopolitical risks remained in focus.

Softer US inflation and encouraging company results offered moments of relief even through it was from a distance. But rising crude oil, West Asia tensions and continued pressure on the rupee kept investors on their toes.

Next week, attention may shift to foreign investor flows and fresh corporate developments. With the broader market momentum still weak, earnings quality and sector-specific developments may continue to matter more than movements in the headline indices.
