11th July to 17th July
|
|
| The benchmark indices posted gains of over
1% on Friday which saw the markets end with some gains to speak of. Till
Thursday, the markets were trading flat, with hardly any triggers. As the last
trading day of the week came upon us, investors and traders took bets in index
heavy constituents like Jio Finance (post its earnings announcement) and
hoped for a stellar performance by Reliance Industries. Tech Mahindra’s better-than-expected performance also saw investors and trader to
turn positive on the IT services space as the gloom surrounding the IT services
space receded. |

| Stocks & Sectors in the News
|
➤
| Information Technology was one of the stronger sectors during the week, with the Nifty IT index gaining around 4.4%. TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech led the recovery as investors responded positively to Tech Mahindra’s better-than-expected quarterly performance and HCLTech’s new seven-year contract win. However, Wipro remained under pressure after its quarterly results disappointed investors and several brokerages lowered their estimates on the company’s performance for the rest of the fiscal. | ➤
| Banking stocks ended the week on a positive note as investors positioned themselves ahead of quarterly results of large private lenders over the weekend. Federal Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank saw buying interest, supported by expectations of healthy loan growth, stable asset quality and manageable pressure on lending margins. | ➤
| Pharma stocks saw stock-specific news flow based moves rather than a broader thematic move. Biocon stood out because its shares jumped after Viatris owned Mylan decided to sell its stake in the company, removing a long standing ‘overhang’ on the counter. However, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla and Zydus Lifesciences faced bouts of selling and profit booking, with investors turning cautious ahead of earnings. | ➤
| Automobiles and Auto Components stocks saw selective buying, led by passenger-vehicle and SUV manufacturers. Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra outperformed during the week, while two-wheeler names such as Eicher Motors also found support as investors bet on improving demand and upcoming earnings releases. Commercial vehicles and components makers were weaker as Ashok Leyland declined during one of the week’s key sessions, while Samvardhana Motherson and Bharat Forge remained sensitive to global growth concerns, export demand and higher commodity costs. | ➤
| Metals fared the worst during the week as investors balanced firm commodity prices against concerns around demand. Newly separated Vedanta group companies, including Vedanta Aluminium and Vedanta Iron and Steel saw major corrections. Tata Steel also began the week with a decline . JSW Steel remained in focus ahead of its Q1 earnings announcement. | ➤
| FMCG stocks traded mixed during the week. Hindustan Unilever recovered towards the end of the week as investors returned to defensive consumer names, while expectations of improving rural and semi-urban demand provided some support to the sector. However, Nestle India, Tata Consumer Products and Dabur faced pressure during parts of the week as investors remained concerned about input costs, modest volume growth and their ability to protect margins. |

| Brent crude rose sharply as renewed tensions between the US and Iran raised concerns about possible disruptions to oil supplies from the West Asia. Higher crude prices can increase fuel and transportation costs and may also add to inflationary pressure. Natural gas futures, however, declined, as US storage levels remained comfortable and a larger inventory build eased concerns about near-term supply. | ➤
| Gold futures declined during the week as lower inflation print from the US led to reduced expectation of rate action from the Federal Reserve A stronger dollar and elevated bond yields also reduced the appeal of the yellow metal among traders and investors. | ➤
| Copper futures ended slightly lower as prices were supported by tight supply, smelter maintenance and demand-linked to power grids, electric vehicles and data centres. However, concerns around slowing consumption in China, the world’s largest copper user, limited further gains. |

➤
| USD/INR
The rupee weakened against the US dollar for the week as sharp rise in crude oil prices increased concerns about India’s import bill and inflation. Geopolitical tensions in West Asia aslo supported demand for the US dollar as a safe-haven currency.
| ➤
| EUR/INR
The euro remained relatively firm against the rupee as global investors continued to assess Europe’s economic outlook and the impact of higher energy prices. At the same time, weakness in the rupee due to rising crude oil prices led to strengthening of the euro.
| ➤
| GBP/INR
The rupee recorded its sharpest fall against the British pound. The sterling was supported by a comparatively resilient UK currency environment, while rising oil prices, global uncertainty and pressure on emerging-market currencies weighed on the rupee.

| Asian Markets
had a difficult week as the sell-off in technology and semiconductor stocks spread across the region. Japan’s Nikkei 225, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and China’s key indices came under pressure, while Taiwan saw particularly sharp selling in chip-related companies. Concerns that AI-linked stocks had risen too quickly triggered profit booking, while escalating tensions in the Middle East and higher crude oil prices made investors more cautious.
| ➤
| Europe Markets
moved cautiously as encouraging corporate earnings competed with geopolitical and inflation concerns. Technology stocks weakened alongside the global chip sell-off, although the UK’s FTSE 100 held up better because it has relatively lower exposure to large technology companies. Overall, the region ended the week with a mixed-to-negative tone.
| ➤
| Wall Street's
had a cautious week as investors balanced strong corporate earnings against rising geopolitical tensions and higher bond yields. Technology and semiconductor stocks came under pressure as investors booked profits in AI-related names, pulling the Nasdaq lower. While the S&P 500 and Dow Jones also ended the week in the red, Nasdaq recorded the biggest decline among the three major indices as weakness in heavyweight chip stocks outweighed positive earnings from other sectors.

As the week ended, investors and traders were positive on the prospects of banks, especially private sector ones, which plan to declare their results on Saturday. Based on the quarterly operational performance updates, investors and traders are hoping for a stellar performance in Q1FY27.
This also drove the markets higher on Friday. If the expectations don’t pay off over the weekend, Monday could see some fireworks in the opening session.
