The length of your credit history can impact your score negatively or positively, depending on how well you have managed your credit over time. A long track record of timely repayments improves your score, as it reflects consistent financial discipline. Conversely, a poor track record over time can hamper it. 

  1. Credit mix

Your score is influenced not only by how you manage your credit but also by the types of credit you use. A diverse mix of credit, such as credit cards and loans, can have a positive impact on your score if managed responsibly.

  1. New credit

Time management is essential in maintaining a healthy credit score. Taking too much credit in a short span reflects your financial instability. A hard inquiry is made on your credit report for every new credit, and multiple such inquiries can lower your score.

Whether it is a late payment or a default altogether, no credit issue stays on your report forever. Here’s how long various issues typically remain:  

  1. Delayed payments: Late payments can stay on your credit report for up to seven years from the date of the missed payment. Even if you make the payment later, the record remains. Hence, it is essential to make timely payments.  
  2. Defaults: Defaulting on payments is more damaging than a delayed payment, as it significantly affects your ability to access new credit. Defaults, too, remain on your report for up to seven years from the date of the default. 
  3. Settlements: A debt settlement is an arrangement between you and the lender where you pay a reduced amount to clear your debt. While it frees you from obligation, the ‘settled’ status may negatively affect your credit score. This record also stays on your report for up to seven years. 
  4. Bankruptcies: Bankruptcy is a legal declaration that you are unable to repay your debts. Unsurprisingly, it impacts your credit score negatively. Much like other issues, bankruptcy can also remain on your report for up to seven years.

Regardless of the factors that impact your credit score, it is possible to improve your credit profile through responsible financial behaviour. Here are some tips to help you enhance your credit score. 

  1. Be consistent with payments

Timely repayment of debt can significantly boost your credibility, as payment history is one of the most critical factors impacting your credit score. Plan your finances well to avoid missing due dates. Automating repayments and setting reminders can also be helpful. 

  1.  Aim to lower your CUR

Rationalise your credit usage. Avoid using credit cards for day-to-day expenses. Keeping credit options open only for emergencies can help lower your CUR. Alternatively, you can request an increase in your credit limit while keeping the same level of usage to reduce the ratio.

  1. Avoid taking multiple loans in a short period

Frequent borrowing is often viewed as a sign of financial instability and can negatively impact your score. To prevent multiple hard inquiries in a short span, space out your loan applications. Keeping a diverse mix of credit types can also contribute to better credit health.  

  1. Be cautious about being a guarantor

If you become a guarantor for someone’s loan, a default on their part can affect your credit score as well. Hence, be mindful and fully informed before agreeing to be a guarantor.
