An ordinary Indian passport for adults has a validity of ten years from the date of issue and can be renewed once it nears expiry. For minors, the validity is limited to five years or until the child turns 18, whichever comes first. If your passport is about to expire and you plan to continue travelling, renewing it in time is essential. Thankfully, you can now do this online.

Issues to watch out for during passport renewal

Tips for a smooth passport renewal experience

Here are some tips that can make the passport renewal process hassle-free and seamless:

  • Check eligibility: Before applying, ensure your passport qualifies for renewal. If it is heavily damaged, you may need to apply for a fresh passport instead.
  • Apply early: You can apply for renewal up to one year before expiryStarting the process early helps you avoid last-minute stress, especially if you have an upcoming trip.
  • Refer to official sources: You can check the official passport website for any doubts or clarifications.

Online vs. offline passport renewal: Which option is right for you?

Applying online is often the more efficient choice, as your details are pre-verified before your appointment at the passport office. This speeds up processing and can save both time and money.

However, if you are not confident with online processes or lack access to the internet, you can opt for an offline application. This requires manually filling out the forms and submitting them at the passport office. However, this method typically takes longer than the online process.

Conclusion

Now that you understand the online renewal process, you can proceed with renewing your passport. Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria and apply well in advance of your passport’s expiry date to avoid any last-minute complications.
